Our Programs

So far this year the NC Maritime Museum at Southport reached over 3,500 kids, students, and adults through its many programs. We took a deep dive into nursing during the civil war, sent secret messages with flag signals, and encouraged people find their inner pirate. Every one of these programs was free and open to all.

Education director Shannon Walker taught indigo dyeing to school groups by demonstrating the dyeing process, explaining the cultural significance of indigo, and engaging them in hands-on activities.

Museum manager John Moseley helps visitors understand how ocean waves, wind and the ships own motion made it hard for gunners to hit their targets.

Fourth graders learn the basics of signaling with flags, practicing key motions and learning how ships communicated. Hands-on practice with flags helps them understand the skill and precision needed for this traditional method of maritime communication
